Viewing distance calculator
Pick a screen size (or a seating distance) and see the range where the picture fills a comfortable slice of your view — neither cinema-huge nor postage-stamp small.
The short answer
For 4K content, sit between roughly 1.2 × and 1.7 × the diagonal away — 2.0–2.8 m for a 65″ TV. That band keeps the screen at about a 30–40° field of view, the range home-cinema guidelines have used for decades. For mostly-1080p viewing, shift the band out by about 20%: the same 65″ TV is happiest at roughly 2.4–3.4 m, where broadcast artefacts and the softer picture stay unobtrusive. These are comfort rules of thumb from field-of-view geometry, not manufacturer standards or medical guidance.
| TV size | 4K range | Mixed | 1080p range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 43″ | 1.3–1.9 m | 1.4–2.0 m | 1.6–2.2 m |
| 50″ | 1.5–2.2 m | 1.7–2.4 m | 1.8–2.6 m |
| 55″ | 1.7–2.4 m | 1.8–2.6 m | 2.0–2.8 m |
| 65″ | 2.0–2.8 m | 2.2–3.1 m | 2.4–3.4 m |
| 75″ | 2.3–3.2 m | 2.5–3.6 m | 2.7–3.9 m |
| 85″ | 2.6–3.7 m | 2.8–4.0 m | 3.1–4.4 m |
Where the numbers come from
Field of view is the angle the screen's width spans at your eyes: 2 × atan(width ÷ (2 × distance)). Cinema design targets roughly 36–45° for the main seats; living-room guidance commonly uses about 30° as the relaxed floor. On a 16:9 screen those angles map to the diagonal multipliers in the table. Resolution enters because pixels and compression artefacts become visible as you approach: at 4K a 40° view still resolves cleanly, while 1080p at the same angle can look soft — hence the outward shift. If your room fixes the distance, invert the maths: divide the distance by 1.2–1.7 to get the diagonal range that suits it, then shop inside it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you sit too close to a 4K TV?
For comfort, yes — past about a 45° field of view most people start moving their eyes (or head) to follow action, which reads as fatigue rather than immersion. There is no eye-damage threshold involved; it is ergonomics, not health.
My sofa is 3 metres away. What size TV?
3 m ÷ 1.7 ≈ 69″ and 3 m ÷ 1.2 ≈ 98″, so anything from about 70″ to 98″ fits the 4K band; 75–85″ is the practical sweet spot most buyers land on for that distance.
Does this apply to monitors and gaming?
The geometry is the same, but desk setups usually target the nearer end and gamers often prefer it. Competitive players commonly sit where the screen fills 30–40° so the whole frame stays in peripheral view.
