Laptop & tablet screen sizes

Laptop and tablet screens use taller ratios than TVs — 16:10, 3:2 and 4:3 — so their diagonals buy different shapes. These are the real picture dimensions behind the headline sizes.

The short answer

A 13.6″ MacBook Air screen (16:10 family) measures about 11.40 in × 7.41 in; a 14.2″ MacBook Pro is about 11.91 in × 7.73 in; an 11″ iPad (a roughly 4:3 panel, 2360 × 1640) is about 9.04 in × 6.28 in in landscape. Same-ballpark diagonals, three different shapes — which is why this page computes every model from its own published resolution.

Dimensions are the viewable picture, computed from the manufacturer's published diagonal and native resolution; resolutions are listed in landscape (width × height). Only models verified against the maker's spec pages are included. The full unit — lid, bezel and hinge — is larger; sleeve and case makers use the unit dimensions from the same spec pages.

Why laptop ratios are taller

Documents, code and web pages are vertical, so laptop makers moved from 16:9 to 16:10 (and 3:2 on some lines) to reclaim the strip that video-first 16:9 wastes on a taskbar and browser chrome. Tablets go further: the iPad's roughly 4:3 panel behaves like paper in either orientation. When comparing a laptop against a monitor, compare heights — a 14″ 16:10 laptop screen is nearly as tall as a 15.6″ 16:9 one.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 13-inch laptop screen really 13 inches?

It is 13 inches diagonally, give or take the marketing class — the MacBook Air “13-inch” is a 13.6″ panel. The picture is about 11.4 in wide, which is the number that decides whether it fits a small desk tray or an airline table alongside a drink.

Does screen size include the laptop lid?

No. Like TVs, the rating is the viewable picture only. For a sleeve, use the manufacturer's unit dimensions — typically 1–2 cm more in each direction than the picture.

Why does my laptop report a smaller resolution than this table?

Most laptops ship with display scaling on (150–200%), so the operating system reports a logical resolution smaller than the panel's native one. The panel's physical pixel count — the one in this table — does not change.
