Phone screen sizes
Phones are sold by diagonal, but pockets, grips and one-handed reach care about width. Here are the real picture dimensions of current and recent phones, grouped by size class.
The short answer
Almost every modern phone uses a tall ratio around 19.5:9, so width grows slowly with diagonal: a 6.1″ phone's picture is about 2.55 in (6.5 cm) wide — the phone itself is about 2.8 in (7.2 cm) across including its frame — and a 6.9″ phone's picture is still only about 2.9 in (7.3 cm) wide. The jump from 6.1″ to 6.9″ buys mostly height and area, not width.

Widths and heights are the viewable picture, computed from each manufacturer's published diagonal and native resolution (the full unit is a few millimetres larger in each direction). Only models whose specs we could verify on the maker's own spec pages are listed — foldables, whose screens change shape, and regional variants are deliberately left out. Resolutions are listed tall × wide; dimensions are computed in the phone's portrait orientation.
Why phones feel bigger than the diagonal suggests
Area grows with the square of the diagonal, so a 6.9″ screen has roughly 28% more area than a 6.1″ screen even though the diagonal is only 13% larger. Meanwhile the tall 19.5:9 shape means most of that gain arrives as height — good for feeds and video calls, neutral for typing width. If you are choosing between sizes, compare the width column: it is the dimension your hand and your jeans pocket actually feel.
Frequently asked questions
How wide is a 6.7-inch phone?
A typical 6.7″ phone at a 19.5:9 ratio has a picture about 2.81 in (7.13 cm) wide and 6.08 in (15.45 cm) high — the 6.7 inches is the corner-to-corner diagonal between those two. Use the homepage calculator with the model's exact resolution for its precise width.
Are iPhone and Galaxy screens the same shape?
Nearly. Current iPhones use about 19.5:9; Galaxy S models are closer to 19.3:9–19.5:9 depending on the generation, and Pixels sit in the same band. The differences are a few tenths of a millimetre in width at the same diagonal.
Why is my phone's screen measured in inches when the phone is taller than that?
Because the number is the diagonal of the picture, not any side. A “6.1-inch” iPhone's picture is about 5.54 in high, and the handset itself is roughly 5.81 in (147.5 mm) tall and 2.82 in (71.5 mm) wide per Apple's dimensions — the naming convention dates back to CRT televisions.
