TV size calculator

Enter a TV's diagonal and get its true width and height — plus the seating distance most viewers find comfortable for that size.

—comfortable distance (approx.)

Dimensions are the viewable picture. Add the model's bezel and stand from the manufacturer's spec sheet before checking a cabinet, alcove or wall mount — typically 0.5–2 cm per side for the frame.

The short answer

A 16:9 TV's width is 0.8716 × its diagonal and its height is 0.4903 × its diagonal. So a 65″ TV measures 56.65 in × 31.87 in (143.90 × 80.94 cm) — wide enough that “will it fit?” should always be checked against width, never the headline diagonal.

*The distance range is a widely used rule of thumb based on the picture filling roughly a 30–40° field of view for 4K content (about 1.2–1.7 × the diagonal). It is a viewing-comfort guideline from home-cinema practice, not a manufacturer standard or a health rule — sit closer for immersion, further for a more relaxed picture, and prefer the nearer end for 4K and the further end for 1080p broadcasts.

How the viewing-distance rule works

What your eye responds to is not the diagonal but the angle the screen occupies. A 40° field of view is the immersive end used by cinema guidelines; about 30° is the relaxed end common in living rooms. For a 16:9 screen, those two angles translate into distances of roughly 1.2 × and 1.7 × the diagonal. Resolution shifts the comfortable point inside that range: with 4K you can sit at the near end without seeing pixels; with standard-definition sources, artefacts show up long before pixels do, and the far end feels better.

Frequently asked questions

How wide is a 55-inch TV, exactly?

The picture of a 16:9 55″ TV is 47.94 in (121.76 cm) wide and 26.96 in (68.49 cm) high. The full unit is a little larger — check the manufacturer's “dimensions without stand” line for the exact cabinet size.

Is a bigger TV always better?

Only if your seating distance grows with it. A screen that fills much more than about 40° of your view forces head movement for sport and gaming; one under about 25° makes subtitles and detail feel small. Use the range in the table for your room, then pick the size that fits it.

What about 8K TVs?

The dimensions on this page depend only on diagonal and ratio, so they are identical for 8K. The viewing distance can come closer in theory, but at typical sizes the difference from 4K is hard to see — the 1.2 × diagonal end is already inside 8K's useful range.

How high should a TV be mounted?

A common guideline is screen centre at seated eye level, roughly 105–120 cm from the floor for a sofa. That is a comfort convention, not a standard — tilting mounts exist precisely because rooms differ.
